My role was to modernise the platform, simplify user flows and adress deficiencies to ensure a more user-friendly and feature-rich educational platform by co-working with a team of 6 people.

My contributions resulted in a significant improvement and made more customers satisfied with the service which in turn increased in sales and profit.

Overview

Teachiq AB is a company that develops a platform called “Kunskapsmatrisen” and delves deep into the daily lives of teachers. Since it’s establishment in 2015, it has become a well-established tool in Sweden and is currently adopted by 70-75% of all high schools in the country.

Lately, the online platform has been suffering from a dated user interface and a notable absence of essential features, leading to suboptimal user experiences for teachers and students.

Challenges: Inefficient navigation, suboptimal user flows, difficulties for teachers and students in finding materials and navigating on both desktops and phones, and a lack of a consistent, responsive UI.

Following a collaborative review of the product with my team and stakeholders, and collecting insights from user feedback, as well as identifying pain points through various user interviews, we determined that optimising commonly used pages, features, and user flows, alongside updating the UI, would significantly enhance the product's development. The current UI is also not optimised for mobile devices, which are highly popular among students, causing difficulties for them in using the website and high drop off rates.

Hypothesis

How might we we enhance and modernise "Kunskapsmatrisen" for teachers and student by improving navigation, user flows, and content accessibility?

Previous version

Concept

After creating a series of sketches and wireframes based on insights and data, prototypes were developed, tested, and validated to ensure that we where designing the right solutions.

Our strategy in upgrading the online platform was to retain as many components and pre-existing elements as possible. This approach compelled us to carefully consider the changes that needed implementation, ensuring that only substantial and effective modifications were made without the need for unnecessary deletions and rebuilds. This also saved us a significant amount of time and effort. This was also important to retain brand recognition and identity.

The concept and idea were to:

  • Enhance user accessibility and upgrade navigation for all devices to facilitate seamless interaction with the platform.

  • Improve flows across pages and links by incorporating user centered design principles.

  • Integrate key features that were previously lacking to empower teachers and students with a more comprehensive and efficient educational tool.

  • Revise the UI and establish a more unified design.

After a couple of brainstorming sessions with the team, I designed newly improved cards featuring tags. The addition was favored by all team members in the organisation as well as users, making it much easier for teachers to organize content and enhance searchability. This resulted in significant success and improvement to the product.

Content page

This is an important page where the platforms offerings are presented, making it a central and crucial point for the product. It is used by teachers to navigate and find the right materials such as math and english tests among other learning material.

In the previous version, teachers struggled to find what they were looking for and spent a considerable amount of time searching, which decreased productivity and increased frustration.

Improved navigation

The previous navigation did not allow users to access all pages and content when navigating further down the hierarchy on the platform, requiring them to click excessively and navigate back and forth from the home screen to access the desired content. Additionally, it hindered users from multitasking.

The revamped navigation system effectively resolves previous challenges, offering a seamless experience across all devices. The modernised UI enhances the visual aesthetics, contributing to an improved overall user experience.

Responsive design

The critical issue of the platform's non-responsiveness significantly impeded accessibility, particularly for students relying on mobile devices. This limitation not only resulted in usability challenges but also hindered the platform's potential for increased sales, given the prevalent use of tablets and mobile devices among students.

Recognizing this missed opportunity, I took a central role in addressing the problem by designing a responsive UI and UX for tablets and mobile devices. This strategic enhancement not only resolved usability issues but also opened up new avenues for the company to tap into a broader market, thereby contributing to the overall success of the project.

Results & learnings

Over a three-month engagement with Teachiq AB, my leadership in modernizing the "Kunskapsmatrisen" platform yielded tangible results, including a noteworthy 10% surge in active users, increased subscriptions, and enhanced revenue. Guided by a commitment to user-centric principles, I strategically retained essential brand elements during the upgrade process, emphasizing efficiency and brand identity preservation. Addressing a crucial missed opportunity, the responsive redesign for mobile devices not only resolved usability challenges but also unlocked new market potential, contributing significantly to the project's overall success. This comprehensive approach highlighted the transformative impact of prioritizing user experience on both engagement metrics and business outcomes.
